Lemon
The Lemon Room takes its name from one of the delicacies of our territory. Lemons, also known as “the golden fruit,” have been present in our region since the 1600s, thanks to the favorable climate and soil. The cultivation of this citrus fruit soon became popular, as it was used by sailors in Liguria to combat scurvy during long voyages! To celebrate this fruit, the Lemon Festival is held in Monterosso every May, where visitors can taste many products made from it. Among the activities, you can enjoy limoncello and take guided tours of the beautiful lemon groves. The famous poet Eugenio Montale also won the Nobel Prize in 1975 for the poem titled “The Lemon.”

Basil
Basil is of tropical origin and traveled through the Mediterranean to Liguria, where the specialized cultivation for pesto alla Genovese began. Basil was originally grown in pots as an ornamental plant and for its healing properties. Its culinary use dates back to the 18th century. It was during that time that cultivation expanded in Liguria, particularly in Genoa (famous for the Prà area). Thanks to the cultivation of basil, farmers in Liguria created Genovese pesto, which was granted PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status in 2006. In short, you cannot miss its fantastic taste and smell if you visit our lands.

Olive
Olive oil has very ancient origins. The first olive trees date back more than 7,000 years. There are many traces left throughout history, as evidenced by its presence in both the Bible and the Quran. It was the Greeks and later the Romans who experimented with mills and the first techniques for producing olive oil. Furthermore, it was thanks to them that, starting from the 8th century BC, the knowledge of the olive tree spread to countries such as Spain, France, and Italy, where the climatic conditions are ideal for the growth of olive trees. In particular, for Italy, it soon became a key part of the economy. Olive oil is used in cooking, both as a seasoning and as an element that enhances the flavor of other ingredients during cooking. It is also widely used in cosmetics for massaging the skin, making it soft and elastic. Highly recommended!

Grapes
The vine appears in the Mediterranean area and in Liguria around the end of the 4th millennium BC. Vines require little rainfall and wind. The climate of the Cinque Terre, rich in winds and poor in water, seemed hostile to the growth of vineyards, yet today the wine of the area is the jewel of the region. The vines are grown “lying down” and not “on walls,” at a maximum height of one meter. The plants are protected from the wind by dry stone walls. Harvesting is done on knees, and then baskets are carried up thousands of steps. Only recently have mechanical methods been introduced to assist the workers. Specific analysis has shown that the wine of the Cinque Terre, especially the white one, is rich in salts, which are deposited in the soil by the sea winds, making it a wine that is useful for combating fatigue. Therefore, it is impossible to taste our wines elsewhere. What can I say, don’t leave without tasting the jewel of the region.

Anchovy
It takes its name from one of the delicacies of our territory, Anchovies, also called “the bread of the sea,” entering through the Strait of Gibraltar, arriving in France in May and appearing in the Ligurian Sea in June, particularly in Monterosso. Since the twelfth century, the technique of preserving them in salt has been perfected (a practice still common today), but anchovies can also be enjoyed in oil, fried, or stuffed. We certainly recommend trying them
